Fiber Sorting

We incorporate 3rd party certified sorters to grade our fleece “live” on shearing day. By sorting and grading, we gain valuable information that helps inform our breeding choices. Fleece weights are taken from three sections of the alpaca; blanket, neck and lower legs. Fiber grades come from the blanket as well as the neck, which is important as we focus on more uniform fleece characteristics. Also included are: brightness, uniformity of crimp, CPI (crimps per inch) amplitude, density, color and comments about the fleece. Sorting and grading also insures that when shearing day is done, we are ready for processing.
